In Sangla Valley, the festival that coincides with Holi is something entirely different. The Kinnauri people call it Faguli — a fire festival with roots going back centuries. Large bonfires are lit in the village square, the village deity is brought out in a ceremonial palanquin, and Kinnauri folk dances specific to each village are performed. The apple trees are in early blossom, the Baspa river runs with snowmelt, and snow caps the surrounding 5,000m peaks.
